Question asked 26/02/2010

My son has an Ankle Foot Orthosis which makes his foot much deeper and longer than the other one. Orthotics used to supply him special boots (each of a different size) to fit over it, but now I am told he can not have these. I can not find anything on the high street that he can wear along with the splint. Please can the Orthotics department tell me where I can get the special deep boots from that they used to supply him with so I can order him some myself. The other problem is I don't know how to measure him for them so please could someone tell me how I do this? Thanks.

Question asked 23/02/2010

I seem to remember that there was a "Drop-In" Clinic on a Tuesday morning which could be used if a splint needed minor adjustment, or another urgent assessment.  We did use this opportunity to sort of such problems quite quickly and efficiently - does this Clinic still exist and if not, would it be a good idea to reinstate one?  It was still necessary to make a booking for this service, so it was carefully managed.

My son's splint broke and we were fortunate enough to get an appointment within a week. At this appointment he was cast for a new one and it was marked as urgent as he was unable to wear the broken one so would be without a splint.

Following our weekly phone calls to Orthotics to check on the progress, the splint finally arrived in the department six weeks later. However, we then had to wait almost another two weeks for an appointment to have the splint fitted. It just seemed silly to me that the splint was there, my son needed it urgently but we had to wait a further two weeks. Could you introduce a special clinic for fittings as this has occurred previously with shoes?
